Closing this year’s London Fashion Week, was London’s own Richard Quinn with a – true to form – bold collection in colour, print, and silhouette. Quinn made a name for himself as soon as he set foot into the fashion scene, and the rising importance of his name was apparent in the star-studded front row and catwalk. Top model Kate Moss came to cheer on her daughter Lila Grace, opening opened the show in a firey red jumpsuit. Next, RuPaul’s Drag Race UK winner Bimini Bon Boulash came strutting out dressed in a billowing purple gown paired with canary yellow thigh-high boots, sporting a shaved back hairdo, giving an overall edge to the softness of the outfit. This juxtaposition between elegance and edge is a theme we see explored throughout the collection.
His iconic latex bodysuits were replaced with frilled bonnets, and these – not too subtle – elegant touches made appearances throughout the line-Delicately pleated bodysuits (raising eyebrow or two at Balenciaga, DELETE THIS JUST WANTED TO KEEP IN AS A JOKE FOR YOU), floral puffer vests and flowy A-line dresses followed suit. There was an overall consensus that the designer has now fully matured. The Central Saint Martin’s alumni knows how to keep his audience on their toes, first by catering to their needs, aka, voluminous dresses and two-piece (a recent addition) fashioned in his signature floral-print yet then changed directions as we saw a full black leather two-piece studded with pins reference the rich punk culture of the 70s.
This SS22 season there was one main star: the shoulder. So, it came at no surprise that in many of the designs there was a - quite literally - heightened emphasis on said shoulders, through exaggerated padding, overall poofiness, or even strapped on shoulder-armour.
Once again Quinn shows himself master of reinventing trends by applying the most subtle tweaks and making the trend his own. One thing is for certain, Richard Quinn fans will not be needing to deal with dirty shoe soles next spring.
