NYFW is back, and if that wasn’t reason enough for celebration, Carolina Herrera would be sure to give you 49 more. As we yearned for a return to normality, dreaming of dressing up, Wes Gorden was designing the wardrobe that any party-girl, retired or not, will be wearing in 2022. Celebrating 40 years of Carolina Herrera, Gorden cast aside his more muted designs and replaced them with ballgowns and ballrooms. What unfolded next, was a parade of evening wear for the women who see fun as their virtue.
Opening the show on a more monochromatic note with a black-and-white muted colour palette, we saw cocktail dresses, reworked tuxedo’s and glorious evening gowns, elegantly cascading over the flow in all their understated grandeur. Gorden showed himself master of finding that sweet spot – in this case, pink – between feminine and sophistication. Crisp white shirt, a Carolina Herrera signature, were twisted and shoulder pads were lifted, only to meticulously plunge down balancing out the silhouette of what will without a doubt be the power suit of 2022. As we were swaying between hard shapes and balloon silhouettes, we see the first signs of spring: flowers and polka dots fashioned on vibrant pastel colours. Dresses were heavily embellished with stacks of pearl, a nod to the younger audience which continued to manifest in the ‘CAROLINA HERRERA’ print, the bralettes, and the sequin tweed pieces. Saluting us to the next show was a show-stopper doing its name proud, as a mighty blush pink billowing gown emerged, sporting a dramatic – and voluminous – train.
One thing is certain, Carrie Bradshaw won’t be the only one wearing a lot more Carolina Herrera…
